If they're voted in the nation effectively gives their Members of Parliament their votes for their duration of office. In the UK, without an enforced constitution (we actually have one, and a Bill of Rights, but few know of it and it's completely ignored by the authorities unless challenged in court by its use) we're pretty powerless until election time.
