Further to my post on a possible Roman Camp in Jersey, I have recently come across a reference to an apparent Channel Islander in the Roman Navy.
A. Basiel Sarniensis, son of Turbel, served in the Misenum Fleet under Vespasian and was demobilised on 5th April AD71. Sarniensis means "native of Sarnia", Sarnia being the Roman name for Guernsey - or more probably Sark. If the long held belief that there was a base for the Classis Britannica in the Channel Islands in true, could Sarniensis have been transferred to Misenum?
The name occurs on a bronze diploma found in Corsica in 1920 but the only reference I have for this is "Bourde de la Rogerie, 1921".
