I think I understand you, WoadWarrior...
Real life legionaries would have looked totally different physically. It has always bothered me a bit how many re-enactors (me included!) look exactly like bookkeepers in a shiny roman outfits....
The conditions of the harsh life would have affected the physical appearance of the legionaries very much. I remember watching my grandpa`s photographs from world war two and how the average finnish soldier (there were also plenty of sauna picture`s, of course) looked like some very stringy bodybuilders compared to us today. Also soldiers faces of about 20 years of age looked like they were forty or fifty. They looked down-right mean! Finland was industrialized as lately as fifties, so an agrarian lifestyle really affected how peole looked like.
Just some thought`s, don`t cricify me!
