As I recall, they're typically about 5 feet long, so you can't get 2 from an 8-foot piece of lumber, unfortunately. We use 2x2 lumber for ours, seems to match the slimmer originals just fine. Some were certainly bigger, but they're 4 times as much to haul around, store, etc.

I made one of mine from oak, laboriously using only hand tools--drawknife, rasp, etc. Then I made a couple from pine, with power saw and sanding disc. After a few years of getting weathered at events, I really can't tell them apart, except maybe by weight...

Some handles are that nice spindle shape you see in Connolly, etc., others are just a waisted section about 4 or 5 inches long. Don't bother being too neat, it's not precision work or fine furniture.
