Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet B 1 - Photoshopped Image
#1
Hi all

I'm sure I saw a sticky at some stage "Share Your Illustrations" or some such. Where did it go?

Anyhoo, I needed to "reconstruct" the British Museum's Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet B 1 (See below), for a handout and thought I might as well share the results, modest as they are.

The BMs description went: "The helmet would have protected the wearer's head with an inner iron head-piece and neck-guard, which are now largely missing. Though the small bosses would have helped deflect blows from weapons, the outer bronze casing is mostly decorative. / A silvery coating of tin was applied to the dome, neck-guard and cheek-pieces, giving a striking contrast with the golden-coloured bronze parts. / The crest box, one cheek-piece and several of the bosses are now missing."

There is a file on this helmet at [url:1pw95qce]http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/component/option,com_helmets/task,view/cid,82/Itemid,96/[/url] My basic photograph was the eighth on this file:

Here's my effort - sadly, In the process of "silvering" the cheekguard, I've lost its 3D convex look. I'll have to re-work that. Anyone got any thoughts on the crestbox and crest? I chickened out at that.

I took a guess that the five holes and circular disruptions to the tinning on the cheek guard might have been the locations of button-like bronze or brass features, like the little disc in the far bottom left corner of this shot (from which I reconstructed the five brass or bronze (? rosettes):
