Wooden pugio scabbards
#3
Most pugio sheaths were probably wood based, before being covered with iron front and back plates (type 'A'), leather(?) and an iron front plate (type 'B') or leather (?) and iron guttering and cross hangers (frame type).

Here is a picture of the remains of a type 'A' sheath where some of wooden core has been exposed by damage to the front plate.

I hope this helps a bit.
