The suspention on the one side of the scabbard about an inch under the scabbard throat makes sure that the grip will be in the correct position and angle to reach it even when pressed on your shield during battle.

And what kind of suspension was this? Rings or hoops on the side of the scabbard? Loops on the ends of the baldric that were slid up the scabbard for a snug fit at the top of the scabbard?
