Making Armor

Ok gang. My son and I want to manufacture our own kit, except for weapons and helmets. My son is a double engineering major and likes trying new things. As far as making lorica segmentata, what is the best type of steel to use and what thickness? Also, what is the best way to manufacture the fittings and decorations for the armor? :?: :whistle:
