Linothorax construction with alternative fabric
#30
The pteruges seem to be flexible but twining isn't the only way to produce flexible pteruges. Fringes and tassles are an artefect of regular weaving techniques. But something is wrong because any material that is as thick as it seems to be in that sculpture will definitely not be so flexible. I'm starting to wonder whether the pteruges consisted of 2 or 3 independent overlapping layers. The Alexander mosaic seems to show a white layer on top with a black layer underneath. It would produce both the thickness and the flexibility that we see in some illustrations.
