These came out in the UK in 2007, but I only saw them for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I guess I don't get round the toystores as much as I used to. 
There are different pieces available in different countries - and in Germany they already have various shield designs and specials.
I think the pieces are great, and have refuelled my interest in both the Roman army and Playmobil figures. Maybe they're not 100% as you would like them, but given the needs of mass manufacture and moulding etc. I think they're pretty good. You could always use acrylic paints to get the look you want!
