General question,maybe little off topic but is sure inspired by this whole topic,you can move it if not in right place:
Is there a particular document or quote that says that the whole shield was painted in myriads or perfectly applied colors,or that the soldier simply painted symbol ON a bronze shield...
(Notice the difference between them below).I'm asking,just for myself (not to imply anything on reenactors work,which I respect, although dislike) which is, more historically accurate(better say historically more likely)..Forgetting for a moment what you find pretty.
Also I can not help but notice that ancient decoration,if any, much more relied on relief,often very fine and complex,and natural looking..while today all decoration,and there is strange need to overdecorate everything, is done by paint:
