Timelines, epochs, and \'compressed perception\'

I live in Europe and am always impressed by how distant WW2 seems to be to the average person.<br>
It only happened 60 years ago. My mother lived thru it and many elderly people I have met have told me horror stories of young men going off to war (brothers, fiancees, husbands), bombs, destruction, nazi reprisals, poverty for many years...<br>
So, to be honest, I am not impressed at all about the compression phenomenon when discussing centuries and millenia. I am more impressed when I see it happen in just a few decades. <p></p><i></i>
