I would love to see your gladiator outfit!!
However i have always been of the opinion that the strips of fabric/ braid placed about the knees, while highly decorated in some instances are an equivalent to our knee braces. In 1984/5 my friends and I did extensive gladiatorial shows and my friend, a hoplomachus, always found that his knees were sore after maintaining the gladiators defensive stance for any period- thus leading me to the "brace" conclusion.
I like the idea of the straps coming off a padded manica were for emphasis of movement for the folks in the stands. D
