I can highly recommend the Europa Barbarorum mod, trying to recreated the world of 272 BC -14 AD as accurate as possible. For me it is easily the best and most detailed Roman repuplican era modification out there. It features huge map from spain to India and Scotland to Meroe, multiple dynamic military reforms for many factions, detailed trait system and several hundred units, all completly made from scratch are some of the highlights.

Another excellent mod is Rise of Persia, featuring a 6th and 5th century BC timeframe. Here you can replay Herodotus Histories.
