the LAST legion...?
#16
Watched it last night with Jasper and Caius Fabius. The movie really is a steaming pile of crap. If you value your sanity avoid this one at all costs. Even if you want to ignore the massive authenticity problems, the movie is STILL a complete dog. Colin Firth must have made a real lapse of judgment to be in this one...

Yup, he is at the moment at least. I think he'll be in the country through Tuesday, then I think he'll be heading off on a short tour of Germany and northern France with Jasper to see some museums... but as I understand it, he'll be basically bouncing around Europe for the next month or so, but not with any clear itinerary.

Yep, I agree Paul, lucky him! Big Grin I thought he might be going over to Europe (with the questions about what places to see etc.) but I didn't know he was going this soon.

what were the actors thinking?

The actors were thinking, "Well, that was a nice-paying project. What's next?" as they went to the bank with their paychecks.

I didn't get back to the USA in time to jeer at this on the big screen.
I shall however, post a travel log at a later date.
Brief
Visited Museums in Lithuania, Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. (The ones in Austria were closed for a papal visit or flooded).
Visited re-enactment/festivals at "Archeon, Netherlands" and "Vidi, Vini" Switzerland.
Saw Castles, cathedrals and Romans sites along the way.
Spent too much money, drank almost enough wine, smoked cuban cigars, and ate local cuisine in 8 countries, and didn't get to the museum in Bonn when it was open. Who lives near there? I'll pay or trade for photos of the current Roman War and Peace exhibit there, especially military equipments, statues hair styles, footwear, wagons and horse equipment, and pottery.
I took a bunch of photos, but the focus was not always spot on, so I'll only have 2000 or so to share.

Highlight of the trip?
My birthday in Pompeii, eating ripe figs from a tree and having lunch on the forum, next to Vespasian's temple. Then excellent Cuban cigars, a wonderful sweet wine, and a party with the staff at my favorite local restaurant.

Low points
Pouring rain in Rome and rain and floods? in Vienna.

Oh well, next time.....

be well (and obey the rules for posting!)

Caius, I had wanted to go to Pompeii ever since I was about 8 years old back about 1950 and read an article about it in, I believe, National Geographic. I finally got there in July of 2006, during the World Cup playoffs, and it not only lived up to all those years of expectations but exceeded them! We stayed in a lovely little hotel in modern Pompei and spent 3 days in the ruins of Pompeii, one day in Herculaneum, one day at the Natural History Museum in Naples to see the frescoes and mosaics that had been moved there to protect them, and we went up Vesuvius one afternoon. I was simply stunned by it all. My favorite spot was old Vespasian's Temple as I have a soft spot for the old dog, ruthless as he may have been. Hell, he was a long time soldier and didn't mess about. But he also had a very realistic view of his own mortality.

One of my major impressions was the extent to which Vesuvius simply LOOMS over everything.

The only problem with the trip was that it was hotter than the hinges of Hell in Pompeii in late July.
