The heads of bearskins

A black bear should be fine. They were around and in Italy as far as I can tell, but if you got a smaller one that would be better.

Etruscan Bear, Ursus etruscus (extinct)

European Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos)

Seems wiki does not have a European Black bear... :? lol:

I can't find it either. But thanks for looking!

I was thinking about buying a bear from Moscow Hide and Fur but it appears that they don't like to send it to the EU Cry

Does anyone know of a source in Europe? Anyone has a pelt they don't need anymore? I'd buy it from you gladly Smile

Well

Sorry, I have no precise address, I just see some skins from "Russia" (I guess it could be rather former soviet Union or even caucase) arriving to westerner hobbysts, or napoleonian reenactors, leather crafters.

Brown bear (Ursus arctos) is annex II on CITES. That means legal papers are required to travel (even to go to a roman event in a foreign country), no forbiding for what I can know.
Wolf skins are easier to get anyway...

Too bad. I'd love an adress.

This is the reason why I'd certainly settle for a brown coloured Ursus americanus . I don't think they are under CITES.

There are a lot of discussions to be read here on RAT about the use of a wolf skin for a Roman signifer or Cornicen. Bears are much more acceptable by everyone.

That's a nice skin, but I'd prefer a smaller one, with a browner pelt, like this one:

If a black bear isn't protected then I think it would certainly a possibility to have one shipped by someone in the US.

I hope I geta decent response from customs over here.

I was the quick one! I also managed to get it for £200 less than the asking price!

Thanks Jim, well spotted!
