Looks Sharp!

Hey Edge, my mom actually helped me with my crest if you can believe that lol. One person bundled up the hair, the other glued and stuck in the holes. Took about 2 hours to do that one...yours must have been what...3 hours at least?

I like the size of yours, very intimidating. how many bundles of horse hair did you need to buy to finish that?

Matt,

You lucky guy -- the only help I had was from a professional wood-worker who cut the block out for me on this gigantic bandsaw in about 30 seconds. (This after I screwed up the first one with a jigsaw).

As to time...hmmm...it took me about an hour to mark the holes, about a 20 minutes to drill them. Sanding and oiling, call it an hour.

The horsehair bundling probably took me like you say, a good 3-4 hours, and then gluing them in for another hour or two. I think I calculated that there are about 100 bundles since this is a full half-circle for a transverse crest; I think I ordered (and used up most of) 2 pounds of horsehair.

All I know is, when you look up "tedious" in the dictionary the picture of my crest ought to pop out.

I make mine using three lines of 6mm diameter holes. There's usually between 30 and forty rows for a standard size crest. Holes are drilled 10mm apart. So, that's a minimum of 90 holes to fill!

If you intend to mount the thing in a brass crest box, then a tip is to use MDF instead of wood! Much easier to work with!

Besides, she's very understanding of my whole hobby -- goes to all of our events, etc.

I married well above my station.
