Quote:Black Bear $2500.00
I only paid $300 for my bear and it included feet and claws. Moscow Hide and Fur has an occasional bargain:

You do not want a fur that is overly large. My bear is about 67 inches from the tip of the nose to the hind claws. A black bear with brown fur is good stand-in for a European brown bear.
I did add a few things such as teeth and eyes, but that is very easy to do.

While we are talking about the various skins used can anyone give some guidance about which types were used by which units and why one one chosen over another.

bear signifers, cornicens, imaginifers, and standard bearers in general
lion As above, but only for Praetorians

Wolf was also worn by velites apparently, I'm sure it is mentioned in the sources and also been mentioned in a thread somewhere?

When it comes to velites wearing pelts on their helmets, a lot of the more recent references I've read seem to think it literally would only be 'some fur', as opposed to an entire pelt.

No John,
Simply entering into the spirit of fun with regards to some of the other answers. No one really believes that the ghost of Augustus would even care, except maybe to get a  or 2 out of it.
