Ancient Military PhDs
#16
Hi Travis!
I agree with most of your advice there! Sorry to say that it's too late for me, having only 7 months left (AAARGH!)
I could adapt point 2: do not become the admin of a site that IS related to your subject. It's an even more attractive excuse (and in fact, my profs have agreed that Romanarmy.com can be proferred in the publication list).
Greets!

Good lord, how on earth can you do a PhD and run this site? Kudos. You might, in a few months time, want to hand it over for the final push - I did absoultely nothing else for the final few months! Not that I'm volunteering, you understand Smile. I did so much work in the last six months, and I still can't believe that it all came together - my advisor was absolutely brilliant - but you'll get it done, no worries.

Oh, and I'm still technically a PhD student as well, so that makes seven (and counting). I submitted my thesis on "Junior Officers in the Roman Army, 91 BC - AD 14" in October, and I'm still waiting for the result of my viva - but being a student means I don't pay council tax (local government taxes) so there's still a silver lining. I have to say that this site helped me write. Sometimes, I got the "why do I do this?" blues, and knowing that there were so many other people who were interested in the Roman Army, even not in my field, gave me a good pick-me-up. So thank you!

blue skies

Hi Tom!
Thanks for coming out as another academically challenged member! I guess you too need to have JAMS pushed in your face! And you are of course invited for our blog idea too. I don't really want to blog about our theses, questions and ideas can always be posted here, but see what other starting ancient military historians think of their chosen trade, for instance.

Well that's cool! You get to have fun AND count it towards tenure! Awesome.

Unfortunately I doubt my committee would agree.

Hey, I'm not saying it counts towards tenure. Maybe, very maybe. I guess we're all lucky internet is slowly gaining importance in academic circles as well.

...and the very best of luck in working on your doctorate. Of course, I recognize that it has nothing to do with "luck;" it's a matter of sweat, tears and persistence.

Congratulations and welcome to 'the brotherhood'. Smile I'm Michael, and, as Jasper has mentioned somewhere in this thread, I am working on the Imperial Urban cohorts. I've not been around much since it's my final year and I'm revising my thesis right now. I'm hoping to submit in September of this year and it's just a bit of a busy academic year so far as I am also teaching.
