On looking through some pictures of Roman Emperors on Jona's site, it scared me to see some who resemble people I know ..... Confusedhock:
One musician friend is the double of Heliogabalus - in looks that is..!
Even worse - my daughter dated somebody I always said would look perfect in a toga .... I now find he resembles Geta.... Confusedhock: Confusedhock:

I think that it is because (a) Roman portraits are pretty realistic and (b) they have no color, so you can imagine that the color of the skin of a modern-day friend is identical to that of, say, the emperor Decius.

As to (a), a perfect tribute was given to ancient painting by the British Museum, when they had an exposition of Fayyum portraits. At the same time, they made scans of the mummies on which these portraits were found. The scientists concluded that the artists who had painted those portraits, were extremely precise.

That is true, the texture of the skin, the precise shade, even the hair colour is not known in many cases. Some of the Fayum portraits look extremely modern, I think one was thought to be a forgery as a result...?
One day I had been watching a television programme about two Roman mummies, a mother and son...
I then went to the supermarket cash machine and glanced up at the young man before me in the queue. He was the Roman's double, even down to the hair style...!
This looks realistic....Hawara Roman mummy mask

Next Roman Days you'll have to put on Matt's Linothorax and pose contropasto like that Augustus statue and THEN we'll do a compare!
