To boldly go where no man has gone before

The miracle is that Shatner and Kelley and Nimoy didn't break up uncontrollably their first minute on set in costume - that they managed to film a pilot episode at all. That's why the Original Series pwns all later versions - it's a priceless, Adam-West-Batman-style comedy classic.

Who could ever forget the hilarity of TURNABOUT INTRUDER, when Kirk gets possessed by the spirit of a vengeful woman and Shatner goes on a bad-acting fuggin' rampage giving us his version of a hysterical, emotional woman. Or the three degenerate-gambler floating brains who kidnap Kirk and force him into gladiator duty? Or the one where the producers, fresh out of scientific 'reasons' why so many of these alien planets looked exactly like Earth, just said "the hell with it", and dumped Kirk and Spock in 1930s Chicago in Jimmy Cagney suits and had Nimoy play a bootlegger called "Spocko"?

While I appreciate the ironic potential in the warm, dignified, single-malt speaking voice of born corporate shill Patrick Stewart...and that guy with a giant engagement ring wrapped around his head is always a plus...the later TREKS just don't have that seedy, naive splendor of the originals. You can feel the actors in the first TREK psyching themselves up to humiliate themselves by thinking things like "In two months, nobody's gonna remember this show was ever on the air, so just read the lines and cash the check and relax - my career will turn out just fine." Oops!

There seems to have been somewhat of an inconsistency in Star Trek scenarios. By that I mean stuff that was thought of earlier and then, odd enough, forgotten. For example, the Enterprise and/or her crew did some time travelling in all the series. Yet, if I recall correctly, none of their time travels was carried out in exactly the same manner! I recall flying against the earth turning in an earlier episode, and tachion particles (sp.?) in a later movie. And there were other means, all different. Big Grin

Yeah, my favorite "goof" was the transporter mistake that made "two" rikers. Of course in earlier scenarios, it's not the pattern but the matter that is being transmitted so this is impossible by even their own improbable physics, yet they violated their own rules as often as they violated the laws of physics.

Who cares. That show rocked.

And another enjoyable piece of Trekmania here:

Spoofs of motivational posters.

My favorite: "I just can't here you over the sound of how awesome I am."

Well that was one of the things that was supposed to be addressed when STNG started- consistency. I recall hearing of a Trek Manual that all writers had to consult to make sure they didn't write anything that contradicted previous stories. In the original series I believe there were 3 or 4 'hardest or toughest materials known' and other mistakes of the like. Hell, early on Spock calls his people Vulcanian, not just Vulcans

OH man- I just saw the redone version of 'Balance of Terror' last night and it was TERRIBLE. The print was great and they (if they did) did a wonderful job of cleaning up the colors and such, but the new CGI ships were silly- didn't look any better than the originals, so what was the point? It'd have been far smarter to juts clean up the old ones- add some more shadows, fix any flaws from the old optical printing, etc.

I just saw Star Wreck last weekend. Very well done, even though the Finnish was a bit hard to understand. Big Grin Nice parody on Star Treck and Babylon 5 combined!

I would rather have fire storms of atmospheres than this cruel descent from a thousand years of dreams.

I agree on all technical points. The one shot of the Romulan craft was obviously cgi. It was weird, but just watching it it made me rethink all the comments on Shatner's acting. We was very restrained and a much better actor in that episode, perhaps because the script is so much better.

Best series:

STNG

Best single episode:

Where do I start? Most involving Q are just hilarious.

Best Space Babe:

Mariana Sirtis aka Deanna Troy. No contest. She is just hot... Though dr Bev Crusher wasn't so bad either...

Best Villian:

Simple: Q

Best Movie:

Ehr... Dunno the title, but the one where they go back in time to find whales and the one where Spock's brother hijacks the Enterprise.

Best Cliche?

Styrofoam rocks and painted backgrounds.

Best line?

"Please captain, not in front of the klingons"(Kirk was about to hug Spock after the latter saved him)

Best Trivia?

Might have been put up, but still: the Vulcan Nerve Pinch was invented by Leonard Nimoy as a way for Spock to overpower opponents without having to resort to violence.

Best Captain:

Picard. Hands down.
"There are some who call me... Tim..."

Sic vis pacem, para bellum

Exitus acta probat

Nemo saltat sobrius

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori

Fortes Fortuna Aduvat

"The enemy outnumber us a paltry three to one! Good odds for any Greek!"

I saw Star Wreck awhile ago and thought it was great fun to mix up the ST and B5 universes... The actors who did the Kirk , Data and Worf parodies really got the characters perfect..

I have not had a chance to see the "revamped" classic trek , was any of the added footage cutting room floor finds or just newly made additions....

The fixed the color sound and image, cleaned up a lot of the noise, etc, amped the colors and contrast. The starfields, starships etc are sharper, better, but look odd compared to the originals.

No new or edited material other than that as far as I can tell.

BTW - My son, age 6, having never seen one before really loved it, although he had a hard time telling the good guys from the bad guys.

I guess it really did have some sparkle if my Star Wars CGI immersed son still liked it.
