Thanks for the invite! I should be able to make it on Sunday.
I am taking all your suggestions and advice into serious consideration. I deeply appreciate all the help I've been getting. But.. that blackend chainmail from the show just looks so damn cool! Haven't bought anything yet. Still doing my researching. Figuring out what I want, how much I want to spend, and what I will use my kit for.

Was it blackened? I thought it was just dull grey through the natural process of steel being in air. You see it on non-galvanised and non-tinned hamata.

It doesn't say it on the website but I remember reading in the magazine that the chainmail was blackened and I love black!

For really good chainmail no one is better than Erik Schmid. His work is incredible just as the real thing was. As a matter of fact his chainmail shirts in one sense are the real thing.

Please, Jim. I'm only called Mr. if I'm in trouble  Mike Bishop linked it, along with all the drawings he made for the book, here:

Here's a few shots from HBO's Rome for you of the chainmail they wore, they are not blackened:
Of course they're 506x316.... just a shade over the 500 pixel limit of this forum so you'll have to click the links.

To darken a scratch-built hamata (usually 16 Ga. galvanized wire), soak the finished piece in white vinegar. That removes the coating. make sure you do this outside, it gives off gasses. Mostly hydrogen, I think. Rinse it with water and let it rust up then tumble it in bucket with some stones to knock off the surface rust. Then you can oil it or spray it with an acid solution used in autobdy work to stop rust. That will turn the rust into a hard gray/black patina. Make sure to have a subarmalis to wear under it when it is done or you'lltrash your tunic every time you wear it.
