yes, leather outer layer is sounding more and more attractive, just getting decent leather source. It would be nice to see and feel it before buying. It's not like I have a clue about the different types and the stats!

Do you have access to Tandy Leather Company? They sell goatskin, deerskin, and elkskin (which is the European Red Deer, so I'm told). Don't know if it's vegetable tanning or not, but it's very soft and makes a good garment. If not, try googling "leather and fur" and you should find some tanneries that are in your neighborhood. You're in Canada, right?

Nope.......Aybeardeeeen!
Tried every where locally!
Brennius gave me a link to a place in Newcastle, so may have to go there.
Leather is too important to buy over the web, unless you are confident in its details/specs.
Cheers anyway mate!

Ave,
David... how did you attach the Tongue Pteryges to the subarmalis? Did you sew them on, glue them? I'm going to have to curve mine to match my cuirass (that's going to be a pain in the Butt!) :?
I’ve just started on my Subarmails, I’m using felt with a diamond pattern quilt (I've been sewing the diamond pattern for three nights and I'm almost done with one side AUGH! ). I’ll most cover the felt with linen but… I’m going to use three rows of Pteryges to match the examples in sculpture... as every example I've seen has multiple rows of Pteryges, I tend to agree with Travis Lee Clark when he says that too many folks use too few Pteryges.
Also, I’m going to try to match the original alternating colors and offset pattern of the Pteryges too.
For example, the Augustus prima statue was originally painted… traces of the paint were used to base this copy on… I’m going with Red and white, the way Augustus’ was blue and red. I'm also going to try and dye my fringe red to match the alternating pattern (as opposed to gold)
Vale!

My subarmalis and past subarmalis's have been made from linen or wool/linen with felted wool interior and quilt stitched to keep it all in place.
When I fought SCA I wore a leather "vest" over it to protect the subarmalis from wear and tear. It also made it so much easier to actually launder the subarmalis...
Currently my Pteryges are in the form of a lightly padded quilt stitched vest as a seperate garment worn over the heavily padded subarmalis.

Yep. Real elk is heavier and more supple. Best leather ever.

Thanks!
Actually I've seen a sea change since I started arguing this two years ago. Many more linen faced pteruges and many more narrow pteruges in greater numbers.
I'd like to take credit but the truth is, all I did was bother to count 'em.
