some observations re the items at the exhibition

the dagger/gladius - first image- it didnt look like a broken off gladius - it looked as if that was its full length. at the top of the handle is a diamond piece - unfortunately I didnt note what type of metal

the gladius- second image- was displayed the other way up - the belt plate under the scabbard.

the gladius with 'frame'- third image- the frame did not appear to be fixed to the scabbard- my impression was that it was a belt. although quite how it was constructed I have no idea! If you look carefully at the pic youll see that the 'frame' is somewhat narrower than the scabbard

these were by no means the only military fiitings on display

there were parts from two other scabbards, some belt plates and buckles - dagger frog and a clump of 5 apron terminals

there wee two gladiator daggers
and one gladiator helmet- which had a motif of captives, etc

I'll try and translate the captions with the photos-------
More confusion anyone? Several years back in Houston, Texas, I attended a Pompeii Exhibit (on loan) at the Museum of Fine Arts. Part of the exhibit was a Roman identified as a soldier encased in clear resin of some kind. Visible were weapons and belt parts. At the time, I was not a Roman re-enactor, so I did not notice any details. The encasement in clear resin for the sake of preservation was interesting though.

Typical how italians go about their invaluable antiquities!
I truly wish the European community would take lead in forcing the Italians to do more about preserving their history...
what i have seen in Italian musea defied logic and was deeply hurting my Roman heart.

What's the object that covers the sheat? Seems thar are made of circular plates, hanging vertically if we see the sense of the figures embossed. Those plates seems hinged between them, and framed by two copper alloy threads (fox-tailed chains?). Enigmatic. Could be one kind of ornamentation independet of the belt?

You're welcome, Christian. Thanks for putting them on your photobucket, so they're easier to see.
To me, it lookst like this 'covering' is independent of the scabbart, which seems to have embossing flower motivs like a commen mainz type scabbart.

Yes, i think so too. The pugio (?) is in fact a very little Mainz with embosed sheat. Prototipic, except by his sizing.

If it isn't a belt, could it be a wide baldric? I am guessing that is the item people are discussing as a possible apron terminal? :?
