Best views are from tombstones which for the period show the apron hanging from behind the belt, this is what I did for mine to show all the belt plates off.

This is my thread on the belt I did which may help. Good luck with yours and keep us posted.

Thank you sir. That is some fine work, and your belt thread was most illuminating. Having never done it before and seeing a plethora of confusing videos on the subject, I was wondering if you might point me in the direction of some good how-to info on tinning brass plates?

Square studs have been found at Rheingonheim, but this belt is to be avoided.

Andy,
When you assemble your belt, make sure you place the pugio frogs correctly. They should be positioned so that if the pugio sheath is laid between them when laid out on the ground the upper suspension rings touch or almost touch the frog buttons. Make sure you fix them in this position and ignore any advice anyone gives you to put them further apart. Do NOT use straps to connect the frog buttons to the suspension rings as you will see many re-enactors doing, no matter hat anyone else tells you. There is no evidence for this practice and all the representational evidence shows the upper suspension rings on the line of the belt itself and touching the frog buttons, suggesting they were tightly tied to them with thonging. Both the representational evidence and examination of surviving pieces shows that the lower suspension rings were not used at all, being retained mainly for tradition's sake.
Another small point, if you are depicting a soldier of Leg XIIII Gemina. The other titles were earned thanks to it being the main unit involved in Boudicca's defeat. Thus from AD61 onwards it was Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix (the twin, warlike and victorious).
