Does anyone know the construction of Roman sails were they similar to canvas were they wool like I believe it was the Vikings had used?

Lionel Casson, Ships and Seamanship of the Ancient World, 234: sails were made of linen. Construction: oblong blocks sewn together, edges secured by a boltrope and had their corners reinforced with leather patches, light lines evenly spaced across the surface as reinforcement.

It was one of the many ideas being kicked around as a side venture. The biggest problem of course being the boat. I am checking on the feasability of some things before I commit to anything. At this point its not more than research, unless youve a Bireme ?

John,
I have exams today, so I'll have to reply to your PM's later on tonight. But in regards to the possible boat project, PLEASE shoot me an email tonight. I have some ideas for you to consider, and I might have some guys to help build the boat if only we can talk them into doing Roman. Oh yeah, the ships carpenter in my Colonial maritime group (The Fish-Broth Society) is starting to do Roman with me, and he might be interested in helping out. Earlier this year (as in 3 months ago) I began about possible making a period fishing vessel and doing some period fishing around here (heck, I live on an island).
Cheers,
Adam
