Ave!
I have a question what I could not find answer for. It is regarding the ear/lever/handle of the shields.
(sorry for my English, but I do not know the exact word for the object)
Let me allow to describe my problem a bit.
- Everybody know well that the scutum has only one handle on the middle of it. it means scutum is held in 1 point
- It is also well known that the Greek shield hoplon has an ear and a handle, so let say it was held in 2 points.
And here comes my question. if the smaller roman shield (mainly used in gladiator combats) would have 1 or two holding point.
I guess both was possible as the Romans knew what the Greeks had known before so the could use for different shapes different type of handles.
I check a lot of pictures and I found no proof that the smaller shield (e.g. parma) had only one handle, as all the statues shows the face of the shield not the back.
So I would be very happy if somebody could tell me anything more about it, and more happy if you could drive me to a picture which is a proof for two point held shield.
All the best
