Here are a couple of photos. Although neither shows the paenula from the front in a normal hanging position the first demonstrates how I have sewed it together and the second show it from the side over armour. You will note the contrast with the other soldier's paenula which is fastened with buttons and loops.

Hello Graham,
sorry for the delay in responding to your query, the rat never notified me of an esponses.
At the oment I have no pics, and am stil trying to configurephotos that the rat will accept(size and formatt problems).
The picture of the Camomile trooper is like mine, two toggles and two round buttons, both of wood.
and it is very warm, and long!

Also Gaham, your books are a great inspiration to me, as are most of the osprey series on rome and ancient warriors.
Just wish I had the funds to re-create some of the looks!

I made a mock up of a full circle cloak. It used an enormous amount of fabric, most of which around the feet where it did little good.

Hi there Tony!
Was that with your armour on? it takes up a bit of the excess!
Also the longer the more heat it traps on guard duty!! lol
Hopefully my new signature will work here? .......

I never tried the full circle it with armour. It was just made from an old tarp.
I ended up making a half oval. A little longer on than sides than it was front to back. This was as much due to the limits of my fabric as anything else.

Math tells us: if you make a full circle paenula with 1.5m radius you will have (2x3.1415x1.5=) almost 9.5m !!! of cloth dangling around your feet - what in heaven or hell would you want to have that for? Frankly, I see no sense in that, but maybe I'm missing something ...

Mine's 'just' 3x1.5, which is heavy enough for me. But if I were travelling along a snowy road in winter, I guess I'd be very happy with it.

I am 5'7" tall, and with the top button on my paenula done, and nothing substantial on underneath, there is at least an 8 to 10 inch clearance to teh floor. Add a segmentata, etc, and that gap should increase. I think I would want a bit of material between me and the elements on guard duty, and on marches (in the winter)
Mine is nice and warm!!

No. You are talking about square meters. 9 square meters. A full circle paenula with above measures would have a little more than 7 square meters.
What I meant was the length of the lower edge of the paenula. This would become more than 9m long.
If you want to have more material because of your segmentata or so, you would need the material further up, mostly in the area of your chest and shoulders, lots of material at the height of your knees or ankles wouldn't help. If anything you would have to make the circle even bigger, for the paenula to still come down as far as before, because having a "roomier" shoulder area would result in the lower edge being drawn up.
If you want more warmth, you would want a 2nd layer, and that mostly around your torse, not many meters of wool falling into lots of folds at the lower end around your ankles (i.e. what you get when you have a full circle).
Actually, ca. 1.3 square meters of a 1.5m radius paenula with 7 square meters (so almost 1/5th) go into the lower 20cm edge of that paenula, for little effect.

How do come to the conclusion that the lower edge would be nine meters?
Mine is full circle, and I do not have this problem of --
"If you want more warmth, you would want a 2nd layer, and that mostly around your torse, not many meters of wool falling into lots of folds at the lower end around your ankles (i.e. what you get when you have a full circle). "
If you use a circle with a 1.5m radius, then your paenula will only be 1.5m from neck opening to the lower edge. I cannot envision how this will give you a 9 m long paenula?

Thanks for agreeing with me on the pont that the lower edge would be even higher off the ground with segmentata on. That is what I said, and what I thought you were saying is that you did not like the idea of all that cloth down by your ankles? :?
This is surely the problem solved I would have thought, unless I totaly missunderstand your point?

Well, ok, you don't have it around your ankles anymore, but 20 cm further up, where it's still not much use and as such a huge waste of material. That was the point I was trying to make. In short you gain very little with a full circle, and that at a huge increase of material (and therefore cost).
In short, I'm with Graham in that a paenula of half-cicular/-oval (or a bit more than that) cut is the way to go.
