Late Roman belts- question...
#1
Hi,

As you may have seen, I'm beginning a Later Roman impression (pics elsewhere with Peronis in full hunting gear).

A question to the other Late Romans out there with considerably more experience- what is the sculptural and pictorial evidence for the Late Roman belt? The reconstructions I have seen are magnificent- but I'd love to get a better understanding of the originals as well?

Thanks for your help,

Cheers

Caballo

Ave,

Here are a few original examples of late Roman belt hardware for you, I hope that helps!

Late Roman bronze belt buckle with a dolphin bow (Colchester: Essex Museum). Typical late Roman military buckle with semi-naturalistic animal designs.

an example of the elaborate decoration of a later broad Roman balteus, on the backside a heavy bronze ring to fix the end of the baltheus coming from the left shoulder.

Thanks for those pics Tony!

That's the original of the Colchester Buckle I sell! The original isn't currently on display, so I haven't been able to photograph it!

Thanks Anthony- great pictures.
Are there any pictures/ sculptures / other showing the best actually in use in the Late Roman era? Or is the record archaeological?

Cheers

Ave,

Actually, that's what I was searching for but I wasn't able to find any sculptures or frescos.

I'm sure someone else will post them but, if I come across any, I'll update this post for you.

I don't know much about pictoral evidence. Which period are you planning to re-enact exactly?
"O niurt Ambrois ri Frangc ocus Brethan Letha."
"By the strenght of Ambrosius, king of the Franks and the Armorican Bretons."
Lebor Bretnach, Irish manuscript of the Historia Brittonum.

Thanks guys- some lovely work there. Particularly like Brennius' belt, and all very helpful.

It seems that we are lucky in that a fair number of Late Roman belt pieces have survived. However, I am still looking for a (any!) contemporary depiction of them being worn in either sculpture or illustration to get an idea of how people in that era actually assembled them. Perhaps I have been spoilt as a 1st C re-enactor with the number of gravestones, Trajan's Column, etc etc.....

Thanks and regards,

Caballo
