Wooden training swords
#1
What model of wooden training swords do you use? What does your group use? Please post pictures.

What kind of wood do you use to make them?

There is a complete wooden sword found at Oberaden and now in the museum of Haltern and I've heard about wooden Roman swords from other sites too. Does anyone have drawings or pictures of these finds?

Thanks Brennius!

I've found a photo of the sword from Oberaden on Livius.org:

I hope it's okay to put a picture here from the Livius.org website...

I've found this reference too:

Caruana, I. (1991) A wooden training sword and the so-called practice post from Carlisle. In: Arma 3, p. 11-14.

Anyone has this? Does it have a picture/drawing of the sword?

You can find the relevant arma number on the net here: http://www.mcbishop.co.uk/arma/arma3-1.pdf

A drawing of the wooden sword is on page 11. Aparently it was made out of oak.

We use a rectangle of ash.. had lots of ash at hand... gladius length with a carved in hand grip and small "hilt". Wrap them from time it time with wool when sparring, but generally use them against the post sans padding.

Marcvs I have that article but youve found it Big Grin lol:  I just wished we had digital photos then back in those days. I had an abundance of oak to play with as you can see in the pic. About 40% of the wood in the yard is oak and it was throwen away Confusedhock: Confusedhock: So I had the keys to cut the wood down on a 3 foot bladed bench saw ,what a beast it was.Fortunatily the wood I made the sword from came in 3"by 2" by about 20 foot lengths yes those were the days Big Grin

Odd that such a thread should be started just as I'm making a couple of rudii too.

Many years ago when I was training with katana, I had a bokken made from rosewood. Over time the edge compacted very nicely, but still kept enough 'spring' to keep from breaking under heavy impact. It has held up many years longer than the more common oak bokken.

I had some salvaged oak timbers so I decided to see how hard this was.

The timber was 2-3" thick rough cut, salvaged from a downed oak in my yard with an alaskan chain mill I rigged myself.

I had to plane one edge down to get an edge smooth enough to run along my rip fence on my 8 1/4" portable table saw. I ripped it to an inch wide with a new carbide blade, but I didn't want to have to bother parring down the edges with a drawknife so I placed it on edge and tilted my blade to 15 degrees. Ran the blank through four times on each edge to get the bevel. Worked great right up until the fourth edge, as I no longer had a flat edge to work against the rip fence. So I had to readjust the blade to get the final edge, but I managed it.

Looks good and saves a lot of sanding and shaping. A little scary on the last cut though. Now I need to fit the hilt. I have some salvaged cherry that is 4" in diameter. I think I can shape a hilt out of that. Will post pictures soon.

I use Purpleheart Armories ( www.woodenswords.com )

I have a Rudis (Pompeii Gladius style), and a short "Celtic Sword". I'm hoping to get a custom made "Spatha" type celtic sword based on a LaTene style sometime soon.

I am thinking of getting a couple! Just need to find a sparing partner!
