Pugio question
#16
Your right Gaius Julius Caesar, being a member of RAT saved me some $ on the Paul Chen pugio.

It can work two ways tho. When i first joined, i purchased Deepeeka's AH 4211 Pompeii gladius only to read a couple of days later that i should have waited and bought Deepeeka's new and more authentic AH 4211N.

My friend got the new one, and i didn't want us both to have the same gladius, so i bought a used cheeper gladius (SDK 1171) from a RAT member. My next step was to buy Deepeeka's new AH 2005 Gladius of Mainz, when i got it (mine anyway) was crap! The scabbard was very poorly assembled, and there were problems with the gladius as well, (pommel and guard). I took the scabbard apart and am trying to repair it.

I should have saved my money and bought one of the more expensive swords that are available.

At least my pugio should be ok.

Yeah, I am agreeing with you there!
I have been trying to contact Hans Binsfeld for some time, but no response. Also another site in germany, but the same! Their work looks well worth the price. I saw one of hans gladii at Corbridge, and was well impressed.

I have just ordered a blunt Albion Alectus, as i am having a scabbard made for my sharp one, And that will be my re-enacting sword. My deepeeka mainz is too clumpy, and the scabbard plates are ..........

I guess if you want a quality gladius you have to be willing to pay the price.

Who is making your scabbard? If i'm not able to repair the scabbard for my Mainz gladius i'll be looking for another one.

I've been looking at the new Fulham gladius being offered by Find It Armory. It has a wood handle instead of bone, but i think that's also correct. What worries me that i'll end up getting it and then read here that it's all wrong!

I'm going to end up with more swords than i want or need Confusedhock: . I guess on the positive side, i'll have some loaner gear for new members of our group until they get their own  .

Len Morgan is making mine. The Alectus has a wooden handle, and seemsfine. That fulham from find-it-armoury looks good and has scope for customisation. But i understand you wariness. What the experts say is good one day, is deemed baaaaaaa-d the next, once they find someone to make a more accurate copy!
I found that out the hard way too.

Thanks for setting up the yahoo group. I have also just joined and have made one or two comments. I will probably make more, as well as setting up a folder which would be more in keeping with the way I would do things.
