...if you mean the traditional Thracian pointed cap with lappets, so often depicted with the patterned cloak ( zeira), it was made of fox-skin !!
(see e.g. p50 of 'Warfare in the Classical World' - Warry or 'Greece and Rome at War'- Connolly.

I can't recall off the top of my head whether the description is from Herodotus or Thucydides ( the former, I think? )
"dulce et decorum est pro patria mori " - Horace
(It is a sweet and proper thing to die for ones country)

"No son-of-a-bitch ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country" - George C Scott as General George S. Patton

Paul,
I should've been more clear....
Yes, I'm familar with the fox skin hat. I'm talking about the long dog eared style hat. There seems to have been several type of head coverings the Thracians wore. The fox skin hat was fairly much a pelt(with the fox's head attached!) with a cloth(?) neck guard. The one I'm interested in is the pointed dog ear type.
Thanks,

I think it's made of wool cloth with a lining. Felt is also possible but the cap would be rather stiff then.

Some head gear was strictly tribal.

The felt (or leather) "Phrygian cap" was more common and the decoration pattern was denoting the tribe/clan in similar manner to the Scottish tartan,

Me and Giorgos have reasons to believe that the fox was the totem of the Odyssians and the racoon of the Vissaltae.

Johhny if you go to www.4hoplites.com you will see felt exampples

Kind regards

Hi Johnny,
our Thracian made his cap out of wool.
