York Calling....
#1
Dear All,
Broadsword calling Danny Boy, Broadsword calling Danny Boy...

Are there any Romans or Greeks (or anyone else for that matter) in the York (that is York, UK) area who fancy getting together one evening for a beer or three?

If you already do ( ) please forgive my brash query. If so, may I join you for a jar?

And now some messages for our friends in Europe: 'John has a false nose', 'the filing cabinet is top-heavy', 'my heart beats with a monotonous langour','grandmother has prolapsed again'.

Toodle pip!

Er..... certainly. York is Comitatus HQ and a few of us late Romans are dotted all over the city. Should we wear a rose in our button holes?

Dear John (ahem),
Good plan, or alternatively 8) .
Do you have a regular get together, or would this be a new thing?

Well I don't wish to give away too much information but....

Currently we see each other every few weeks to put on events.

After the Middlewich Festival our "marching season" starts. Walking the Wall etc. The first walk is the last weekend of September. This year I would like to do something similar but on horse back. Say 20 miles on a Saturday, and the same on the Sunday, camping over on the Friday and Saturday night.

Once a month over the winter, some of us meet to go riding/get hit by horsemen etc.

And occasionally we met in York for a few drinks. We are in the process of organising the Christmas event as I type.

If you all wear those funny 'late' helmets you use, you would be able to recognise each other instantly in a crowded pub! 8)

Calling young Lochinvar,
Not in York all the time, unfortunately. If I am in the fair city, we could meet and partake a little, before I travel homewards.

Yep, I'm local. Fridays and Saturdays are best & I could do next weekend... Pannonian caps are almost as conspicuous as helmets & I'm not about to suggest sandals and socks!

OK chaps and chapess,

It looks as if we have some potential for a loose gathering of classicists here, albeit finding concensus on a suitable day will be harder.
For example, I'm not good for your average weekend.

Anyway, as a 'starter-for-ten' how's about:
Wed 26th Sep, 7.30-ish in the Golden Fleece, and we can adjust future dates , timings and venues. No pressure, but come one, come all!

I'll be wearing a Scotland rugby jersey, just so the locals can know who extant local statute permits them to shoot with bow and arrow.

If no-one comes along at 7.30, my next venue will be the gutter outside the pub at about 10.00.

Cristina, have you been letting that black fox out again?

Seriously, though, no pressure. I shall report back on the success or failure of this toe in the water and we can build, adjust or bin this venture.

"Hello Broadsword this is Father Macree!"

"General Carnaby can not make the rendezvous in Crete!"

As I no longer live in York I can not meet up with you but would have been pleased to do so otherwise. I thought your call sign went totally over the heads of the York guys so thought it deserved a proper response!

Shame you're geographically challenged Graham, as I suspect you'd have added some tone to what otherwise may be a vulgar brawl.
