Sychrotron reads unopenned scrolls

Maybe a real advance for reading papyrii, this new method doesn't even attempt to unroll the scrolls. While it looks like it's being applied to medieval parchments, let's hope it can work on the carbonized papyrii as well.

It builds a 3 dimensional image of the entire scroll, as I understand the article, and then finds out where the ink is and deciphers the text. Never have to cut the scroll open.

Yes, I saw a news item on this too....unfortunately most of the Pompeii scrolls that have so far been opened and deciphered are obscure and esoteric philosophies, and thus of little interest today......but one can always hope, especially as the work can now proceed so much faster, without the need to open or destroy the scrolls !!
