1st/2nd century civilian clothing..
#1
Hej everyone..
I'm in the process of starting an auxiliary unit up here in the (currently) frozen north, but i have no idea about female/civilian clothing and footwear, hairstyles, etc. which we will ( one would hope) need to know about. You know how it is. We're not just aiming to bring in the 'common soldiewy' we want to attract families too, and therefore want the necessary info about all things civil and civilian, but more especially clothing, in the beginning anyway.
I'm thinking that this may be more a matter of Germanic tribal dress, too, since we're going to be a Batavian unit. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Roman Military Clothing I by Graham Sumner is the best source I have seen when it comes to military clothing in that time period.

This doesn't seem to be a bad link to get started, but not very informative, just gives you an image http://www.crystalinks.com/romeclothing.html

Heres a better one

Try these:

J. P. Wild, Clothing in the North-West Provinces of the Roman Empire, Bonner Jahrbücher 168, 1968, S. 166-240

The Clothing of Britannia, Gallia belgica and Germania inferior
by John Peter Wild, ANRW (Aufstieg und Niedergang des römischen Weltreichs) II.12.3, pp. 362-422

You could also add Alex Croom's 'Roman Clothing and Fashion', published by Tempus. There is a small chapter on provincial dress but obviously the aspects of clothing in the northern provinces probably derive in the main from the two articles mentioned by Martin.

Graham.
"Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream" Edgar Allan Poe.

"Every brush-stroke is torn from my body" The Rebel, Tony Hancock.

"..I sweated in that damn dirty armor....TWENTY YEARS!', Charlton Heston, The Warlord.
