Hmmmm, this has been raised before!

The popular opinion was an italic H....or the Hebron reinforced helmet, not sure what other candidates were
This is one link where it was discussed...

depends on era which you want to recreate... this type of segmentata was in use for than 150 years... so you have quite many choices

Would a Italic type B,H,G or D do the job? Would one of those fit for a early/mid second century soldier?

An Italic H would do the job indeed. It falls into that time frame.

Yes, I believe I did mention that option!

Could a Gallic G- type helmet be used with a Newstead lorica? Would it be in the timeframe so that maybe a soldier could have had one in year 115 A.D or later? I don't really know the timeline of the usage of different equipment, but help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would imagine one of the H varients Gallic or itallic would do, although it has been said that a helmet could have been used over a longer timeframe than its introduction or find date!

The experts will certainly be more specific, but I plan on using the Neidermormters, or the itallic H when I finally get a newstead....

Peronis, Tarbicus, Matt Amt, are good sources of info!
Young Jef is not too bad as he is doing a uni course from what I gather and always seems to know a thing or two.
Probably a few others will offer you accurate info as well!

A Gallic G (or D, E, F or H for that matter as they're all contemporary)
could well be 70 years old by 115.

There is evidence of retro-fitted cross-bracing on an Imperial Gallic type from Berzobis, but slightly earlier dating (Dacian Wars 102-106)

The Gallic I type with the crest finial is featured on the Adamklissi metopes from the same period.

Your best bet for the 115 period would be either the Gallic J or K (watch this space for the K  ) or Italic G types from Hebron,

The Theilenhofen Italic G, (We are the only commercial supplier of these)
http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/component/ ... Itemid,96/

or the Brigetio Italic G.

By 115 I would also suggest that the Corbridge type cuirass was still well in use, probably more so than the Newstead type.

I would also suggest that the Italic H or Neidermoermter types were later second century rather than early to mid. The Italic D types from Mainz and Krefeld are quite similar and there is a lot of conflicting views on their dating![/i]

But you could argue that seventy years in ancient terms of usage was not a big deal? We see helmets with several owners names on them, after all?
What was the exact time scale for Newstead usage? I see it is being suggested that they could have lasted into the 400's?

Another question, Peroni.

What is the earliest point of usage for the Newstead lorica?

Dr. Mike Bishop (a regular here on RAT) says
Quote:The main period of use of the Newstead type was c.A.D.140-250.
Which is why I suggested a Corbridge type in my earlier post
Have you seen his website? http://www.loricasegmentata.org/
