Coolus reconstruction
#16
Quote:Peroni, do you think the neckguard it's a little long?

Maybe only by 5mm, but neck guards vary a great deal on the Coolus E types.

I think what you have is fine, and looks great!

Ahh that supplier! I tried to contact them once or twice, but they never responded if I recall!

I'll certainly post if/when I get a reply. The web site mentions that they are taking a break through January.

I have used that:

But they have almost finished coolus helmets, too.

Nice job on your helmet!

Interesting you used the round bowl. The one in the picture is the piece I commissioned so that I could make a cauldron. After that she posted it as an item made-to-order. I got a helmet from there also and have rolled the edge (after much annealing), though it is still in the works. The thick material makes it ideal to further forging. And bronze looks so much sweeter than brass anyway.

A great helmet Big Grin
I got a Coolus-E from Nijmegen with cheekpieces also from Nijmegen (the original helmet was found whitout cheekpieces) and I payed for it 600€! You can be proud on your work, really.

That is a very nice helmet indeed Cesar however I have just been looking at the beginning of your post with regard to the position of the hinge, where you mention that there is less face protection with the hinge so near to the neck gaurd. The latest picture you have shown does infact show this where the wearers face is a bit exposed, would it not be a good idea to drill another hole a bit more forward and move the hinge the rear hole could be made countersunk on the outside and filled with a rivet that could be peened over then filed to hide it was there.

I only mention this from the point of view of your own considerations in your much earlier posting of this helmet, apart from all that it realy looks very good indeed.

Great looking coolus; slightly OT but while I have the coolus experts here... please see the attached picture/image, from an etched metal plate of the 6th C.
what sort of helmet is that? It looks like a coolus D or E, but I can't tell what is on the front of the helmet.
