Canteen Covers?
#1
Hello folks, I have started making a cover for my canteen, supplied by the wonderfully tallented Julia Passamonti or Venitian Cat!

I was wondering if anyone would know what to do with the outside?
I was going to treat it with neatsfoot oil, and brand my initials and some other motifs on it. It is made of a sheepskin rug, so is there going to be any issues using neats foot oil?

Any suggestions would be helpfull and appreciated!

The original piece from the second century (if it's the one from the Mazzaron mines in Spain) had an esparto grass cover.
The photo I sent her of the original pieces can be seen on Julia's site.

Yes I was hoping it would be sent with that cover, but guess we got wires crossed. Anyway, am doing mine from Sheepskin, so any tips?

Seems like a shame to cover her handi work, but would be a bigger shame to break it!

I can make one to fit the canteen as I have one of Juila's canteens at home somewhere.

Thats ok, it comes with a net type suspension system, I am just doing the sheepskin to give it some protection and some extra thermal properties...
Was thinking more along the lines of branding design and name, legion id and then neatsfooting it! guess will just carry on as I am, damn the consequences...it looks a little 50K BC at the moment, but never mind, hopefully will turn out ok! I knew this pink sheepsskin would havea multitude of uses!!

Peronis,

Do you have any idea if esparto grass is in any way similar to any of the grasses I might see around or be able to grow near me? By the look of the cover in the photo it has been made in the same manner than one might use to make a bee skep, which might be fidly in that size but not hard technically.

Crispvs, wouldn't the romans have used local materials that could do the same job?

I know what you mean! It is a ceramic peice and will break easily but her stuff is pretty tuff!! I have taken mine to every event including lafe, timelines, presentations, and mock combat stuff, and it is still in one peice.

I have used the net bag that came with the canteen but have wanted to put a cover over it with the unit designation on there similiar to the scutum tegimen.

Esparto grass is the same stuff they make the soles of espardrilles from (obviously) I'm not certain, but with the popularity of grasses as ornamental plants, you might try the local garden centre.

The wife believes it's a sea grass native to the Mediterannean areas, and according to Rvfilia quite sharp!

How about stringing together two woven grass place mats/coasters????

So any idea on branding leather/sheepskin? before using the oil I would guess.
What pattern to use for the id?

Magnus,

I am sure they would have so I was wondering what they would have deemed suitable in my neck of the woods.

Peronis, your suggestions seem very good. I just have to get myself a canteen now.

Make sure it's different from the ego, so as not to confuse yourself.

OK, OK Arrow
The pattern should be whatever your unit leader says. EZ. An electric soldering iron or "wood burning" tool should be fine.
