I'd like to help out, but don't know how I might. I have no paticular expertise to offer other than my experience in using 1st/2nd century equipment in regular combat - all be it non-leathal combat of course, although broken fingers, noses and cracked wrists are not uncommon

Not all projects require expertise, other than an ability to herd cats (or RATers/volunteers).

Hi Martin,

what are you thinking about when you say "leather" database/imagebase?

For example, I learnt the most of I know about roman leatherworks above all from your posts, so - AFAIK - I guess that you are the most expert overhere and so the most suitable person to gather all the articles and images about the subject and manage any contributions from the members. Every newcomer in roman reenactment, even if lacking of a sufficient quiver of (often rare) books, could get certain data to decently re-make a vast range of roman leatherworks for his equipment, without feeling immediately repelled for his inadequacy.

Just as a start, it could be organized a section like the R.A. helmet database with photos and captions. Moreover a series of short articles to sweep away the fog and avoid gross mistakes in the reconstructions.

Of course, the leather section could be contain:

shoes
belts
baldrics
armours and armours parts
scabbards
bags
canteens
tents
hats
subarmales
gloves?
horse harness
saddles
helmet linings
various accessories

What do you think?

thanks for your answer.
I'm not sure about the database thing since the concept up to now seems to be to handle artifacts of which there is a decent number, rather than reproductions, reproductive techniques and general/basic knowledge on the theme as such. But that would not be for me to decide.
Aside from that the idea is certainly tempting, although I must admit that at the moment I cannot really see where I should take the time for doing something like that (remember the pugio-database lurking in the background :-) ) ). If done it should be more than just packing all the things about shoes, bags, etc. I and others wrote about in one place, it would have to be edited, eventually be updated and brought in to a stringent form. Quite a bit of work I fear.

May I suggest two projects:

1. Pictures-from-internet-auctions database
(would require several people from different countries working on it at least once a week, and would require a database usable from the frontend with a load of subcategories like e.g. differen types of fibulae - Most of these objects are otherwise lost for reenactor´s or academical use)

2. A Roman-Military-Myth-Buster section (articles and sections from the forum discussions)

I would volunteer to coordinate project 1, if enough people join in
I would contribute to project 2, but not coordinate it.

I think the internet auction items idea is very good. However I would suggest that it has 'fakes' and 'possible fakes' sections as well, if only to use as a resourse to use to warn people against fakes and forgeries.

basically your idea seems good - but then this forum should not in any way "help" or advise collectors of ancient artefacts. I´d rather simply not take fakes into the database. If someone collects and buys fakes - too bad for him. His "hobby" is destroying our past and helps a criminal scene grow. This is RAT and not Collector´s Info Forum, IMO.
In fact, if we would help, several laws from several European countries would be broken.
