Pilum Construction
#1
Can anybody tell me when the pilum construction changed from two pins to three on Matthews legio XX site he shows construction of pilum with three pins, I assume these had been changed from the original Iron, Wood, double pin arrangement introduced by Marius. any ideas?

The pila Stofel found at Alesia (presumably having belonged to Caesar's soldiers) had wide tangs pierced with two rivet holes. The Augustan period Oberaden pila have narrow tangs and three rivets.
Is there a picture of the Oberaden pilum? MC Bishop said that this pilum was likely the one used the most, not more popular tanged version in use by most reenactment legions.
Magnus/Matt
I think there's probably a picture in the JRMES volume which treats Republican weapons. Number 8, I think.
