Today some of my grandchildren visited. They wanted to play Roman Legion so I let them take hamatas, helmets, shields, a set of segmentata and wooden swords out to play. (They are 12 10 8 and 7 years old) I had told them about the Roman Legion's duties - Fight barbarians, build roads and forts, keep the peace and collect taxes etc. I thought they were going to play in the yard! They decided to go to houses in the neighborhood and "Collect taxes". They came home with $19.00 in "taxes"!

I will have to Challenge my son Minimus... all his legion does is march around a leave needlefelts out in the rain... Taxes eh???
Sounds like great fun. Minimus (Jonathan to those who know him) is soon to be 12, and at Castra Romana he led the kids cohort complete with crest and centurio gear. He has the neighborhood kids trained to fight in Centuri and Phalanx style. Great fun to whatch. Kid is after my job. What will the next Generation of Romans look like????
Good to see your kids are still young at heart John. Now admit it... you snuck some armor time in there too, didn't you!
No wonder kids that grew up En Castris were such a valuable tool to the legions.

When Gerard and me are on the roman 'watchtower' at fort Vechten, we are used to ask taxes from the bypassing cars. (Note that that way is the only one to leave the modern fort). Of course we are corrupt, so we could do with some candy-stuff, and don't accept money. It's always a lot of fun, and you've some nice meal during the day.

Hmmm, we tried that in Borneo, but my friends dad told us not to be so stupid :roll: Mind you we had machine guns and rocket launchers..... :lol:

One and a half year ago, my group has been in Trier at the "Kaiserthermen". My soldiers have much to doo, as usual, but our kids where bored. The night before, there where a great show in the catacombs, with lightshows, mystical music, dancers (most of them women and halfnaked) and 100s of candles in the wallniches. So, our kids started in the morning to collect all candles and spend them at the entrance of the catacombs to all visitors. Most of the visitors paid voluntarily for the candles, especially a group of japanese tourists, who paid 20euros! As all candles "spend", the kids ran to the exit of the catacombs to get all candles back and "spend" them again.
In the afternoon, they earned more than 80euros :lol: !
At the next day, we saw our kids only with icecream, goodies and chocolate in there hands and a shiny smile in there faces.

Kind of reminds me of when I wore my Roman kit to recess when I brought it to school. I need to get some real stuff and walk around Chicago's beaches saying that the legions need money for conquests.

Glad to see some younger people have an interest in history - A lot of current reenactors are ,well, getting elderly.
I belong to the Legio V in Tennessee and they are an exception being mostly
college students and I have a hard time keeping up with them - Drill Drill
and more Drill - my feet hurt by the end of the day and then they want to sleep in the Legion Leather tent on the ground! OH my back!
