Ancient Rome in 3d!

A team of archeologists has made a 3d reconstruction of ancient Rome in the year 320. Google Earth has made a simpler version avaliable online.

I spent 8 months working on it last year prepping it for the release stage. It feels good to be finished with my end of it. I did a lot of topographical research trying to make it as accurate as possible before the official release, but there are still many additions and revisions to be made. I did some basic modeling, particularly of structures that were missing from the Campus Martius before I started on the project (which were numerous). If you have questions, fire away.

There is a very detailed version of the model called Rome Reborn 2.0 ( http://www.romereborn.virginia.edu/ ). Most of the work on that was done about 6-8 months ago by a Swiss procedural modeling company and rendered by IBM. Eventually the detailed version will be made accessible to users via an online virtual reality environment with realtime rendering by Mental Images, the developers of the mental ray renderer which is packaged with modeling suites such as 3D Studio Max and Maya.
