Helmet question
#1
Hey guys,

Anybody who knows what kind of helmet this might be?
I thought the guy was wearing it in a merovingian or viking context, but the helmet also looks kind of late-roman to me.. :?

I see a lot of elements of the Baldenheim type in it, but also a lot of other elements.

Late Roman sure, Merovingian sure (but maybe not too late), Viking no.

And the nasal is wayyyy too long! Big Grin

The guy on the left.. He's wearing almost the same helmet (the nasal is the only major difference I spotted.. ), so it can be used for the same times then?? (Late-Roman/Merovingian  )

Manuel.

Some people just wear and buy what they like, without concerning themselves about the historic correctness of the item.

I like this helmet, too. I've seen it referred to as Saxon, I believe.

Hi There,

I have seen fragments of this type of construction of the 'spangen' parts of the helmet from excavation reports of Caucasus / Eastern European context.. of Avaric origins - The construction of the 'parts' (overlapping strips which support the panels) are consistent with others I have seen from Avaric sources... which would put them slightly earlier than the Carolingians... but of course, they could be used throughout that period too - I have seen these come up in excavtion reports up to the 10th Century in Central Europe...
