I happened upon this paper examening the skulls of gladiators for wound type and placement. Very interesting.

I, too read this article and also had the chance to hear F. Kanz lecturing at the amphitheater conference last year in Chester. The Austrian Archaeological Institute does the excavations in Ephesos and in this thread you will find out more about the gladiator grave from Ephesos:
