Servants/noncombatants travelling with armies
#1
Another question... Smile Can anyone give me a more-or-less representative percentage figure of servants or noncombatants travelling with a Republican army?

I'd also like to know whether mules were preferred over oxen.

Thanks.

Rowan writes in Osprey No. 71 Roman Legionary 58 BC - AD 69:
Quote:The legion also had a large number of slaves (calones) attached to it, perhaps 120 per cohort, at least on campaign. These were trained for particular duties and some were armed and might defend the camp (Josephus, Jewish War, 3.69; Roth 1994: 351).

so on four legionaries would be circa one slave (calo) ... IIRC, there was about one mule per contubernium. more mules for special task. ... hope this helps on the first part of your question. Big Grin

I'd really like to know it for myself. May be someone here is able to tell us that by calculating this from the size of the cannabae legionis / vicus (i.e. camp villages).
