I am trying to learn the specifics of the practice of doctoring during the empire and or first cent. ad. I am somewhat familiar with the tools, but need more knowledge. Does anyone have any suggestions for information?
Thanks

I would highly recommend 'Doctors and diseases in the Roman Empire' by Ralph Jackson.

Does anyone know how to constuct a capsa? i am not too interested in buying the one from armillum even though it looks wonderful...
I assume its a thick hard wood inside, with a leather covering and brass fittings.
comments? suggestions?

Wait, that's not a reconstruction of a Roman bag, is it...

I'd say no. At least I'm not aware of a find or depiction of any sort that goes into that direction. I once wrote up a kind of overview of the bags that are backed up by actual finds: Pocket Guide

Martin is right it is not based on a find but it was made before any of the info he has posted was avalible at the time, I made it. So I went with the wriitten info I had which was a round leather tube open at one end, except I made it side opening for my instruments. My Latin dictionary 1899 describes Capsa as a round cylinder for various uses mostly for documents ect. As well as in most books the medical orderlies are desrcibe them carrying round tubes hence nik name. They may have also used old document tubes to carry bandages in as well. How many of us have box files that were to be throwen away at work and we have used them at home   Now with the internet we now have a wonderful informative tool to use. So keep up the good work Martin and every one Big Grin D

Matt Amt of Legio XX made one pictured here: www.larp.com/legioxx/capsa1.jpg

As mentioned above, the word translated to "scroll case" so Matt based his off of a scroll case. It's all leather covered in wax.
