Quote:here you are I spotted Aris Velouchiotis in one of those photos, and was surprised to see that he had a beard. In my imagination, he was beardless - funny how the image of the classical god Ares influences you when you think about a namesake in the present.

Contrary to the general belief most guerrilas tried to shave.
Beards were something of "priviledge" to leaders. The "lefties" had a unit of "geneiophoroi" (beard carriers) that appeared in Athens in 1944. Though considered an elite they were accused of barbaric brutality especially in the civil war and most of them were shot to pieces in the fighting in front of "Makrygianni Gentarmerie Station". Kind regards

Stefanos,
Thanks for the links... I've got to do an illustration of a Greek fighter in a city setting. Mostly civilian clothing with maybe a German weapon.... Johnny

Mix civilan-military clothing ok but if he is a guerrilla of a "regular" unit military items dominate. "Reservist" urban guerrila would have more civilian looks
If you are after 1943 much British clothing was thrown bu parachutes but the headgear could be old Greek or Italian. Weapons were british, german, italian and even forme rGreek Army equipment had survived. Kind regards
