Marathon 2011
I sent an email to the director of the B Archeological Ephoria which is reponsible for all East Attika antiquites.
I asked for a licence for 20 persons to do a filming on locations.
If she does not answer by tommorow I will go to their office on Monday.

Filming the location is no big deal.
Filming persons on location requires an individual fee per person.
A scenario of the re-enacted scene must be provided (crazy but true)
Introductions or speeches by narrators must also be provided.

Kind regards

Stefane, i also spoke with the responsible archaologist for the tombs of Athenians and Plataeans, Mrs Siskou today on the phone. She is not primarily negative for the permits but i am in contact with her.
Oh,and we are going to be much more than 20!

I'm not sure we are "good and well organized" but I am sure Giannis is working his heart out on it. And if we all push together... (to quote Stephanos) we will have an event.

The next major issue is going to be registration, because for everything from water and toilets to parade and attendance at major sites, we will need headcounts. We will have a website up with an automated registration form by a week from today at the latest. Please watch this thread, and when the time comes, please register accurately!

Glad to see you guys have calmed down and are getting somewhere on this, if not where you had envisaged it! Believe me Christian, the inside of a Greek cell is the last place you want to spend time in Greece!!

Calmed down? I run five of these a year... just for perspective, last year's Rev War event at Fort George Ontario had 2500 participants...

on the other hand, it wasn't on another continent...

Seriously, it is a subject for much rejoicing and much tension, and of course we have to get ourselves together. In (let us say) the American Revolution reenactment period, we have three umbrella organizations who all cooperate, with almost 20K members shared among the three and a leadership meeting every winter in a convention center with almost 600 people --JUST TO WRITE THE SCHEDULE and set rules and so on.

Ancient reenacting--Hoplites and Persians--has been around a decade or more, but has not developed the infrastructure or the support--much less the traditions of use, the insurance structure....

...so there will be some teething pains. But we're getting there, and Marathon, I hope, will leave us with some traditions and some experience on which to base the future. Because Plataea and Thermopylae and Salamis and Artemesium are only ten years away!

And that Fort George event with 2500 reenactors? That took six years to plan and coordinate.

Website is up. Here are the rules on registration. PLEASE READ THIS!!!

If you belong to a group or unit==the GROUP should register, and only one person should do it, so we don't double count anyone.

If you are an individual without a group, please register for yourself, and please be prepared to be part of a group. There will not be any "lone hoplites" at Marathon.

And please note the part about insurance. if you have no insurance, then pleae come prepared to pay 15 Euros for insurance on the day.

Insurance must cover you against the possibility of injuring a member of the public. Your travel insurance will cover everything else.

Thanks!

This all sounds fantastic, I would have made efforts to come along to this had I not already paid for a flight to attend the burning man festival in Nevada... I'll only be getting back the day before the Marathon event

Our latest update:

We have an official permit from the Town of Marathon, which includes permission to camp int he pine forest on the beach (photos on the web site.) Giannis is working (Giannis is working very hard!) to get the Archaeological service to allow us some special access, and I'm trying to get the same via the Ministry of Culture. On a negative note, the latest cabinet reshuffle has put us back to zero with the Ministry of Culture--but on a positive note, we have discovered that all we need to march and drill in the Agora is a Police permit, and that seems to be on its way. These, and many other issues, are being worked simultaneously.

If you are coming, we need you to register. increasingly it is obvious that we will have to buy our own straw and perhaps even our own drinking water; we discovered yesterday that we'll be paying for the chemical toilets on site. Given Greece's level of financial crisis, that makes sense. So please, everyone, expect a small fee--don't imagine we're making money, here--more like a mess bill.

E-mail me if you have any questions, check out the website at http://marathon2011.hoplologia.org/index.html and COME TO MARATHON

That's great news! Awesome! I really wish I could be part of this!
This was what led me into re-enacting in the first place, the dream of being a hoplite in Greece!
Good luck to all of you!
