1st century Roman elephants in battle
#1
Maybe this has been discussed in older posts (I couldn't find any), but do we know how Roman battle elephants were equipped? Caesar brought some with him to Africa (to accustom his troops to them). Claudius brought sent them to Britain in his invasion. Were these naked elephants with a mahout, or might they have been armored? The Numidians did not armor their elephants, did they?

I think it might have been in this thread, Andy. Maybe.

That is an interesting discussion. Yet, how about elephants in Roman use? I would think that they made their own modifications to the Sucessors' practice of elephant warfare.
I was able to check out a copy of Kistler's "War Elephants," but I don't see a mention of Roman elephants' equipment. It seems like most authors are concerned with events, and not the objects (arms & armor) used in those events! Thank goodness for RAT! I enjoy the study of objects!
