"National Roman Legion"
Quote:I believe that is the exact point, the Roman Army was well trained and a disciplined fighting force. They trained as hard (actually harder) than they fought.

I believe it was Josephus that said - Thier drills were bloodless battles, thier battles bloody drills.

Quote:All a soldier needs in a press is enough room for his gladius to slide through or over the shoulder of the man in from of him. He doesn't even need to stab hard or fast.

I am not so sure about that. Anyway, you took my sentence out of context. The meaning of it goes along with the scenes on the arch of Orange. One might also add the Adamklissi metopes, which show similar poses.

Quote:VIRTUS embodies not just strength or toughness, or bravery but also duty and soldierliness.. doing what is needed under the most adverse circumstances. Sometimes it can take all one's being to not rush out to attack, but to wait, even if you are one passus away from an enemy soldier or from reaching the top of the wall first.. waiting for the order to advance... arrows and sling stones and sticks and rocks and all manner of debris and horror pommeling your scutum... and the enemy's taunts burning your ears... discipline and duty
No, you are absolutely wrong here. In fact, these are two different hings for the Romans. virtus is a concept contarary to disciplina. You may want to read e.g. "Soldiers and Ghosts", as Caius said, especially chapters 8, 9 and 10.

Quote:one is told they are innacurate due to close quarters combat, and that the evidence is on monumental collumns. The next momment this evidence is being decried as artistic license, and we are having a debate that they indeed did fight in looser formations.
Well, that is something one has to learn very quickly in classical archaeology and in history: Critical method. Just because the columns are not valuable for idendifying the space a soldier had within a formation, it doesn´t mean we canot deduce any information from it. The testudo, e.g. is very well displayed, and can be used. The difficulty is to find by cross-referencing where the artistic conventions are applied, and how, and where they are not applied. Gets quite confusing sometimes...  Smile

I still say a well trained soldier will fall back to his training when all is said and done. Point in case: In the 1980's there was a shoot out in Texas, I want to say Dallas but not sure. Where several Police Officers were killed. All of them had empty casings in there pockets. They had been trained on the shooting range to put there empties in there pocket. This training came second nature and when they got into a real shoot out ,they tried to do the same thing when they reloaded there revolvers. The Officers that had survived the shootout were asked why they put the empties in there pockets they all replied with that's what we were told to do at the range. Shortly after the investigation they started to carry semi-auto pistols so they could no longer do that!
So I say that in the heat of battle, training will take over and soldiers will follow there training without even knowing it! I have seen this first hand in 2003 when we went into Iraq!

Ave to all!
I have been following this thread closely and not commenting because the "New Guy" doesn't "draw" on the top gladiuses if he's smart. However, I will add my comments now: A.) I would gladly make a scutum with the "National Legio" emblem on it if it would allow me to participate in a large group gathering. B.) Ditto a NRL tunica in "official" color. C.) If the gathering is within 12 hours drive time, (from Dayton, Ohio) I would definitely attend. I think, like all other ideas, an NRL is a good idea IF folks are willing to accept that no one of us has ALL the answers. As Rodney King once said" Can't we all just get along?"

P.S. Magnus, once I move to Wisconsin, I will come up to your place and take that initiation  What type of Beer? Not "Old Chief Oshkosh" I hope

This post has been removed by the author. I do not see a point to being on a forum where moderators such as Matt Lanteigne aka Magnus can practice harassment and hypocritical behavior. RAT seems to have slipped into a place where people of this ilk can do or say whatever they want AND since he's a moderator, I guess it's all okay w/ the forum owners. Good luck, but I am done here.

I do not think a "national organization" will work too well based on the myriad of different impressions that there are out there. Note it isnt a negative as more a logistical issue.

I like the 1st CAD impressions, but it is not my focal point for the hobby. I prefer Ceasar-Augustus time frame. Would the National Org take this into consideration?

How would meetings be conducted? With a National you will have units (as there are now) all over the US, would they be broken down by regions?

I see several challenges to the idea but nothing that could not be worked out with compromises.

I think the compromise issue is the main point of contention.

Someone once said, 'To compromise is to be in league with the devil'....or something along that line. Churchill possibly, so perhaps some people have that mindset too?

I think of all the reenacting sects I have been associated with, this era is a bit better about working together and sharing information.

If it will work (which I said is a possibility) now is the time that it should be ironed out. For if the hobby grows, the headaches will come along with it.

Whether or not we need it is the question.
